30% is Intro

Continuing on from my previous post, I want to write about my students’ papers from the social science class. My students, in general, did well. A few, however, did not so good. They had something smart to say. They made a legitimate argument by the end of their papers. But they had about 30% of their papers dedicated to Intro. With another bit of the papers dedicated to Conclusion, the body part in which they actually got to discuss the important issues was just about slightly more than a half of their paper. An ideal paper, at least in my mind, would have a little bit more dedicated to the body section.

I will be allowing those students to revise the paper so they can get a better grade. But nonetheless, my continuing question about freshman writing remains. What should freshman students learn in their tier-one classes?
